Proving His Presence

“Gideon threshed wheat by the winepress, to hide it from the Midianites... And the angel of the LORD appeared unto him, and said unto him, The LORD is with thee, thou mighty man of valor… And Gideon said unto him, Oh my Lord, if the LORD be with us, why then is all this befallen us?... And the LORD looked upon him, and said, Go in this thy might, and thou shalt save Israel from the hand of the Midianites: have not I sent thee?” (Judges 6:11-14).  “Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you?” (1 Corinthians 3:16).

The angel came to Gideon
When Israel was distressed.
The multitudes of Midian
Relentlessly oppressed.

Israel wasn't then forsaken,
But they were disciplined.
Their land was only overtaken
Because God’s people sinned.

The angel of the Lord appeared
And spoke to Gideon’s heart
To show him that the hosts he feared
By God’s hand would depart.

“The Lord is with thee, mighty man!”
But Gideon could not see
His proven presence or a plan
To set His people free.

The Lord then looked on him and said
To “go in this thy might.”
And thus by God was Gideon led
Against the Midianite.

The church of God appears so small
Against apparent odds,
And yet His Spirit dwells in all
Its temple, which is God’s.

Lord, let Your presence now be proved;
For then we cannot fail.
Against the gates of hell we’ve moved;
By grace we shall prevail.
