Tender and Terrible

"How often would I have gathered thy children together, as a hen doth gather her brood under her wings, and ye would not!" (Luke 13:34).

How tender the portrait of Jesus we see
In the beautiful traits God instilled in the hen:
Whenever her chickens sense danger they flee,
And under her wings they find refuge then.

How terrible then, that though our Lord would
Be gathering souls as a hen does her own,
That many would not, so forfeit the good
That God in His marvelous love would make known.
