Battling the Blasphemy

“And David said… Is there not a cause?... Then said David to the Philistine, Thou comest to me with a sword, and with a spear, and with a shield: but I come to thee in the name of the LORD of hosts… The LORD saveth not with sword and spear: for the battle is the LORD'S” (1 Samuel 17:29-47).  “Shall the enemy blaspheme thy name forever?... Arise, O God, plead thine own cause: remember how the foolish man reproacheth thee daily… the tumult of those that rise up against thee increaseth continually” (Psalm 74:10,22,23).  “He that winneth souls is wise” (Proverbs 11:30).

Is there not a cause today
To battle against blasphemy?
Is there nothing we should say
As mockers mock increasingly?

Do not we have the Lord’s command
To study that we might reply
To help another understand
The truth that scorners will defy?

As David stood against the giant,
He knew that God was his Defense.
Prepare to battle the defiant!
Should not we have this confidence?

It’s not to win an argument
That we prepare a word in season,
But to deny perceived consent,
That we refute their scorn with reason.

O Lord, You see the tumult rise
Of those blaspheming without fear,
So for Your name’s sake make us wise
To answer those who yet will hear.
