Remembered Reputations

"The king of Ai (עַי ʻAy, ah'ee, ruin; heap) he hanged on a tree until eventide: and… Joshua commanded that they should take his carcass… and raise thereon a great heap of stones, that remaineth unto this day" (Joshua 8:29).  "The memory of the just is blessed: but the name of the wicked shall rot" (Proverbs 10:7).  "When the centurion, which stood over against Him [Jesus], saw that He so cried out, and gave up the ghost, he said, Truly this Man was the Son of God" (Mark 15:39).

Some reputations shall attest
Of righteousness, but others not.
The memory of the just is blest;
The name of wickedness shall rot.

The king of Ai had a name
Of one who stood against the Lord.
That name means "heap", and to his shame,
A ruined heap was his reward.

Our righteous King we know so well,
Who bore the dreadful judgment rod
For sinners whom He saved from hell,
We worship as the Son of God.

You hung, O Lord, upon that tree,
To thereby purchase our salvation.
As we remember Calvary,
We glory in Your reputation.
