Competency to Comfort

“Let those that fear Thee turn unto me, and those that have known Thy testimonies.  Let my heart be sound in Thy statutes; that I be not ashamed” (Psalm 119:79,80).  “With the lowly is wisdom.  The integrity of the upright shall guide them” (Proverbs 11:2,3).  “Jesus answered… It is written, that man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God… The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, because He hath anointed Me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised, to preach the acceptable year of the Lord” (Luke 4:18,19).

When souls are searching for the truth,
We ought to show them where to look!
The Word of God will train our youth,
And so may we who know the Book.

O may our hearts be thereby sound
As students who are not ashamed,
Because our competency found
Is from the Scriptures we have claimed.

Our competency is derived
From every word of God’s instruction.
O may we daily be revived
And guarded thereby from seduction.

We preach the Gospel Christ has spoken;
There is no other we can find
That heals hearts distressed and broken,
Imparting sight to those once blind.

We preach the Gospel to the poor,
As any soul without Christ is,
To show them He is at their door,
And if they open, they are His.

We preach the Word that makes us free,
For only Christ break our chains,
And He will grant His liberty
Which every soul He saves obtains.

O Lord, we thank You that You sent
Your comfort in this sinful place
By which we are made competent
To preach to the Gospel of Your grace!
