Riches of our Ransom

“Because there is wrath, beware lest He take thee away with His stroke: then a great ransom cannot deliver thee” (Job 36:18).  “I have rejoiced in the way of Thy testimonies, as much as in all riches” (Psalm 119:14).  “The ransom of a man's life are his riches: but the poor heareth not rebuke” (Proverbs 13:8).

Because there is wrath, we are called to beware
And look for a refuge wherein we may hide.
Because there is wrath, we are called to prepare
And seek for a ransom that God will provide.

Praise God for the ransom extended through Christ,
Who laid down His life to atone for our debt!
The price has been paid by the Lamb sacrificed;
The cost of salvation has fully been met!

Now what can compare to this ransom we hold
Which God has provided at so great a cost?
In Jesus our Savior are riches untold
Procured by His life which He gave for the lost!

How poor are the souls who will not hear reproof!
How deep is their need that they will not admit!
How great is the danger as they stand aloof
As day after day they draw near to the pit!

How full is our joy in this wondrous redemption
Declared in the Gospel of Christ we have heard!
How high was our ransom, beyond comprehension,
Thus called the “Unspeakable Gift” in God’s Word!

O Lord, we give thanks these riches displayed
By which we are ransomed from sin and from shame!
When all of the wealth of this earth has decayed,
Our treasures in You shall be ever the same.
