Comparing Compassion

"Can a woman forget her sucking child, that she should not have compassion on the son of her womb? Yea, they may forget, yet will I not forget thee. Behold, I have graven thee upon the palms of My hands" (Isaiah 49:15,16). "Unto Him that loved us, and washed us from our sins in His own blood... be glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen" (Revelation 1:5,6).

To what shall we liken the love of our LORD?
With whom could He ever compare?
Examples must fail, for none will afford
A likeness of His loving care!

Yes, even a woman with her sucking child,
A marvelous portrait of love,
With all her compassion, so tender and mild,
Falls short of God's mercy above.

Behold, we are graven upon His own hands:
We see there the wounds of the nails!
Yes, this is the place where the soul understands
That every comparison fails!

O Lord, we are speechless as we contemplate
The searching that only begins
To view Your compassion, so matchlessly great
That washed us from all of our sins!
