Tremble and Trust

"The transgression of the wicked saith… that there is no fear of God before his eyes" (Psalm 36:1).  "The counsel of the LORD, that shall stand… The fear of the LORD tendeth to life: and he that hath it shall abide satisfied; he shall not be visited with evil… An ungodly witness scorneth judgment" (Proverbs 19:20,21,28).  "As he [Paul] reasoned of righteousness, temperance, and judgment to come, Felix trembled, and answered, Go thy way for this time; when I have a convenient season, I will call for thee" (Acts 24:25).

What kind of person doesn't fear
When mocking God's authority,
Refusing counsel he should hear,
Indifferent to eternity?

The counsel of the Lord shall stand,
No matter what the scorners say.
It is the fool who has not planned
To meet the Lord on judgment day.

The fear of God makes sinners wise
And satisfies their longing thirst
With truth that opens blinded eyes
And grace that saves those who were cursed.

How strangely many hear Your Word,
O Lord, and tremble when they hear it,
Yet do not trust You when they're stirred
By the conviction of Your Spirit!
