Cause for Confidence

Read:  Psalm 123 / Proverbs 21 / Nehemiah 4 / Philemon 1

 

Psalm 123:1 ~ Unto thee lift I up mine eyes, O thou that dwellest in the heavens.

Proverbs 21:2 ~ Every way of a man is right in his own eyes: but the LORD pondereth the hearts.

Nehemiah 4:20,21 ~ Our God shall fight for us. So we labored in the work: and half of them held the spears from the rising of the morning till the stars appeared.

Philemon 3 ~ Grace to you, and peace, from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

 

We lift our eyes to God above

Who calls us to His throne of grace,

Who ponders us with tender love,

And bids us each to seek His face. 

 

The Lord shall be our strong defense,

For He Himself shall fight for us. 

This is our cause for confidence:

By grace we are victorious!

Labor for the Lord

Read:  122 / Proverbs 20 / Nehemiah 3 / Titus 3

 

Psalm 122:6 ~ Pray for the peace of Jerusalem: they shall prosper that love thee.

Proverbs 20:18 ~ Every purpose is established by counsel: and with good advice make war.

Nehemiah 3:5,27 ~ And next unto them the Tekoites repaired; but their nobles put not their necks to the work of their Lord… After them the Tekoites repaired another piece.

Titus 3:1,4,5 ~ Be ready to every good work… The kindness and love of God our Savior toward man appeared, not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration. 

 

We pray and labor in God’s field

Until our Lord returns again.

We preach the truth He has revealed

That saves the souls of sinful men. 

 

Like those who prayed and built the wall

In spite of those who labored not,

We labor on as we recall

The price with which we have been bought.

Good Hand of God's Help

Read:  121 / Proverbs 19 / Nehemiah 2 / Titus 2

 

Psalm 121:2 ~ My help cometh from the LORD, which made heaven and earth.

Proverbs 19:21,27 ~ The counsel of the LORD, that shall stand... Cease, my son, to hear the instruction that causeth to err from the words of knowledge.

Nehemiah 2:18 ~ Then I told them of the hand of my God which was good upon me… And they said, Let us rise up and build. So they strengthened their hands for this good work.

Titus 2:13,14 ~ Our Savior Jesus Christ… gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works.

 

Our help comes from our great Creator

Who made the heaven and the earth.

Our foes are great, but God is greater

Who gave to us our second birth. 

 

Let us arise, therefore, and build 

As God gives strength by His good hand.

We know His Word shall be fulfilled;

The counsel of the Lord shall stand.

War of Words

Psalm 120:6,7 ~ My soul hath long dwelt with him that hateth peace. I am for peace: but when I speak, they are for war.

Proverbs 18:2 ~ A fool hath no delight in understanding, but that his heart may discover itself.

Nehemiah 1:11 ~ O Lord…let now thine ear be attentive to the prayer… of thy servants, who desire to fear thy name.

Titus 1:9 ~ Holding fast the faithful word… by sound doctrine both to exhort and to convince the gainsayers.

 

There is a war of words today

That through the ages does not cease

Between the wise who show God’s way

And fools who yet reject His peace. 

 

But God has heard the earnest prayer

Of those who humbly fear His name.

The word that lifts them from despair 

Is in the Gospel we proclaim.

Led by His Love

Psalm 119:176 ~ I have gone astray like a lost sheep; seek thy servant; for I do not forget thy commandments.

Proverbs 17:3 ~ The fining pot is for silver, and the furnace for gold: but the LORD trieth the hearts.

Ezra 10:2 ~ We have trespassed against our God… yet now there is hope in Israel concerning this thing.

2 Timothy 4:1 ~ I charge thee therefore before God, and the Lord Jesus Christ, who shall judge the quick and the dead at his appearing and his kingdom.

 

Though we, like sheep, have gone astray,

The Lord has led us by His love. 

He draws us back into His way,

And sets our heart on things above. 

 

How graciously our Lord has led

To give us hope and dry our tears.

Into His refuge we have fled

To watch and work till He appears.

Inspired Inspection

Psalm 119:162 ~ I rejoice at thy word, as one that findeth great spoil.

Proverbs 16:24 ~ Pleasant words are as an honeycomb, sweet to the soul, and health to the bones.

Ezra 9:8 And now for a little space grace hath been shewed from the LORD our God… that our God may lighten our eyes.

2 Timothy 3:16 ~ All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness.

 

My heart rejoices in God’s Word

As one who finds eternal wealth. 

I am reproved, restored, and stirred,

Inspired by His saving health.

 

The Lord reminds me by His grace

That I am under His inspection,

As time affords a little space

To heed the Word of His correction.

Promised to Preserve

Psalm 119:160 ~ Thy word is true from the beginning: and every one of thy righteous judgments endureth forever.

Proverbs 15:28 ~ The heart of the righteous studieth to answer. 

Ezra 8:18 ~ By the good hand of our God upon us they brought us a man of understanding.

2 Timothy 2:15,21 ~ Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.

 

The Lord provided from the start

His Word by way of inspiration. 

Its purity shall not depart;

This is the truth of preservation. 

 

Our God’s inspired Word was true 

The day it came from His good hand.

He promised to preserve it too,

According to His sure command.

Ezra's Example

Psalm 119:151,152 ~ Thou art near, O LORD; and all thy commandments are truth. Concerning thy testimonies, I have known of old that thou hast founded them forever.

Proverbs 14:25 ~ A true witness delivereth souls: but a deceitful witness speaketh lies.

Ezra 7:10 ~ Ezra had prepared his heart to seek the law of the LORD… to do it, and… teach in Israel statutes and judgments.

2 Timothy 1:7 ~ For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.

 

God’s Word is true; the Lord is near.  

His truth forever shall endure.

We’re called to make the Gospel clear;

The sinner has no other cure.

 

When Ezra had prepared his heart

To seek, and do, and teach God’s way,

His good example from the start

Put godly teaching on display.

Bible vs. Babble

Psalm 119:140,141 ~ Thy word is very pure: therefore thy servant loveth it. I am small and despised: yet do not I forget thy precepts.

Proverbs 13:20 ~ He that walketh with wise men shall be wise: but a companion of fools shall be destroyed.

Ezra 6:22 ~ The LORD had made them joyful, and turned the heart of the king of Assyria unto them, to strengthen their hands in the work of the house of God, the God of Israel. 

1 Timothy 6:20 ~ O Timothy, keep that which is committed to thy trust, avoiding profane and vain babblings, and oppositions of science falsely so called.

 

The Word of God is very pure

With precepts that His foes despise. 

Yet wise men know its truth is sure, 

No matter who is telling lies. 

 

Though we may face opposing kings,

The Bible’s truth shall still remain.

When fools forget these basic things,

They turn to babble that is vain.

Word to the Wise

Psalm 119:130,133 ~ The entrance of thy words giveth light; it giveth understanding unto the simple… Order my steps in thy word: and let not any iniquity have dominion over me.

Proverbs 12:5 ~ The thoughts of the righteous are right: but the counsels of the wicked are deceit.

Ezra 5:5 ~ The eye of their God was upon the elders of the Jews, that they could not cause them to cease.

1 Timothy 5:21~ I charge thee before God, and the Lord Jesus Christ, and the elect angels, that thou observe these things.

 

The entrance of God’s Word gives light

With understanding to the lowly.

When we agree with God, we’re right,

For God is faithful, true, and holy.

 

We live before God’s searching eyes,

And therefore, we should never cease

To fear the Lord and thus be wise

So that His glory may increase.

Wise to Work

Psalm 119:125-126 ~ I am thy servant; give me understanding, that I may know thy testimonies. It is time for thee, LORD, to work: for they have made void thy law.

Proverbs 11:30 ~ He that winneth souls is wise.

Ezra 4:4 Then the people of the land weakened the hands of the people of Judah, and troubled them in building,

1 Timothy 4:16 ~ Take heed unto thyself, and unto the doctrine; continue in them: for in doing this thou shalt both save thyself, and them that hear thee.

 

It’s wise to work when God commands,

For this is when the Lord gives grace.

The one who knows this understands

That it is time to seek His face.

 

The time for winning souls is short!

Let weakened hands embrace the plow

And sow the seeds of our report 

Of God’s salvation here and now!

Vain vs. Valued

Psalm 119:113 ~ I hate vain thoughts: but thy law do I love.

Proverbs 10:16,21 ~ The labor of the righteous tendeth to life… The lips of the righteous feed many.

Ezra 3:11 ~ And they sang together by course in praising and giving thanks unto the LORD; because he is good.

1 Timothy 3:16 ~ God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory.  

 

How vain the lies are we have heard!

How valued is the truth we see!

The Lord has fed us with His Word

With Gospel truth that makes us free. 

 

Give praise to Christ as we proclaim

He is the Hero of the story:

He died to save us!  Praise His name! 

He rose, ascending up to glory!

Trait of the True

Psalm 119:112 ~ I have inclined mine heart to perform thy statutes always, even unto the end.

Proverbs 9:9 ~ Give instruction to a wise man, and he will be yet wiser: teach a just man, and he will increase in learning.

Ezra 2:62 ~ These sought their register among those that were reckoned by genealogy, but they were not found: therefore were they, as polluted, put from the priesthood.

1 Timothy 2:3-6,15 ~ God our Savior… will have all men to be saved… the Man Christ Jesus… gave himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time… they continue in faith.

 

I have a steadfast inclination

To follow Jesus to the end.

This is the trait of true salvation

That all God’s children comprehend.

 

The love of God extends to all,

Though many choose to turn away,

Yet those responding to His call

Shall love the Savior they obey.

Christ's Commission

Psalm 119:97,104 ~ O how love I thy law! it is my meditation all the day… therefore I hate every false way.

Proverbs 8:35,36 ~ For whoso findeth me findeth life, and shall obtain favor of the LORD. But he that sinneth against me wrongeth his own soul: all they that hate me love death.

Ezra 1:3 ~ Who is there among you of all his people? his God be with him… build the house of the LORD… (He is the God).

1 Timothy 1:15 ~ This is a faithful saying, and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ… came into the world to save sinners.

 

I love to hear my Savior’s voice

When reading from His Word each day,

And thereby I have made the choice

To hate the false and deadly way. 

 

I hear Christ’s urgent great commission

To preach the Gospel faithfully

While souls may yet escape perdition.

My heart says: “Hear am I; send me!”
