Sorrowful Similes

“Salvation is far from the wicked: for they seek not Thy statutes” (Psalm 119:155).  “He goeth… as an ox goeth to the slaughter, or as a fool to the correction of the stock, till a dart strike through his liver; as a bird hasteth to the snare, and knoweth not that it is for his life” (Proverbs 7:22,23).  “They… turn from the holy commandment delivered unto them.  But it is happened unto them according to the true proverb, The dog is turned to his own vomit again; and the sow that was washed to her wallowing in the mire” (2 Peter 2:21,22).

The Lord has gone to great extremes
To offer such a great salvation!
Though all have sinned, the Lord redeems
And rescues us from condemnation!

O how could anyone refuse
God’s wondrous offer on display?
Alas!  We see so many choose
To thrust His gracious Gift away!

The Lord has given similes
To illustrate this sad condition,
Portraying the catastrophes
Of those who spurn His admonition.

An ox that’s to the slaughter led,
A fool that’s going to the stocks,
A bird which to the snare has sped,
Are all like one who blindly mocks.

A dog to vomit will return;
A pig will wallow in the mire.
It is their nature thus to yearn
For baser things that they desire.

In all these similes we find
The images of God’s instruction
Which show the nature so inclined
To turn from Christ to vain seduction.

O Lord, we see the time is short
As many will not hear Your voice.
They mock the truth of Your report
And walk in darkness still by choice.

Lord, in these similes here shown,
We see the need for second birth.
The Gospel makes this offer known
Which You extend to all the earth.

With similes so sorrowful,
You’ve show us, Lord, why we should weep
And pray for every precious soul
As we go forth to sow and reap.
