His Names meet Human Needs

Read:  Psalm 144 / Proverbs 30 / Isaiah 4 /Luke 17

Psalm 144:1,2 ~ Blessed be the LORD my strength, which teacheth my hands to war… my fingers to fight: my goodness, and my fortress; my high tower, and my deliverer; my shield, and he in whom I trust; who subdueth my people under me.

Proverbs 30:4,5 ~ Who hath ascended up into heaven, or descended?...  what is his name… his son's name, if thou canst tell?  he is a shield unto them that put their trust in him.

Isaiah 4:2,6 ~ In that day shall the branch of the LORD be beautiful and glorious… and there shall be a tabernacle for a shadow in the daytime from the heat, and for a place of refuge, and for a covert from storm and from rain.

Luke 17:26 ~ And as it was in the days of Noe, so shall it be also in the days of the Son of man.

The names of Christ meet human needs:

He is our Fortress and our Shield.

Our risen Shepherd safely leads,

And by His stripes we have been healed.

He is our Shade in daytime heat,

Our Guiding Light when it is dark,

And in the storm our Lord shall meet

Our needs like Noah in the ark.

Will it be Well?

Read:  Psalm 143 / Proverbs 29 / Isaiah 3 /Luke 16

Psalm 143:8 ~ Cause me to hear thy lovingkindness in the morning; for in thee do I trust: cause me to know the way wherein I should walk; for I lift up my soul unto thee.

Proverbs 29:18 ~ Where there is no vision, the people perish: but he that keepeth the law, happy is he.

Isaiah 3:10,11 ~ Say ye to the righteous, that it shall be well with him: for they shall eat the fruit of their doings. Woe unto the wicked! it shall be ill with him: for the reward of his hands shall be given him.

Luke 16:22,23 ~ The rich man also died, and was buried; and in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham.

The Lord has caused our ears to hear

His lovingkindness every morning.

His Gospel makes our vision clear

And saves those who will heed His warning.

Because our Lord was sacrificed,

We trust Him, and it shall be well.

But woe to those rejecting Christ,

For no one else can save from hell!

Christ Cared

Read:  Psalm 142 / Proverbs 28 / Isaiah 2 /Luke 15

Psalm 142:4,5 ~ I looked on my right hand, and beheld, but there was no man that would know me: refuge failed me; no man cared for my soul. I cried unto thee, O LORD: I said, Thou art my refuge and my portion in the land of the living.

Proverbs 28:26 ~ He that trusteth in his own heart is a fool: but whoso walketh wisely, he shall be delivered.

Isaiah 2:22 ~ Cease ye from man, whose breath is in his nostrils: for wherein is he to be accounted of?

Luke 15:18 ~ I will arise and go to my father, and will say unto him, Father, I have sinned against heaven, and before thee.

I knew that I was not prepared
To go into eternity.

I looked around, but no man cared,

And every refuge failed me.

At last, I cried to God above

And found in Jesus Christ my peace.

Wherein is man accounted of?

Praise God whose mercies never cease!

Reproof and Reason

Read:  Psalm 141 / Proverbs 27 / Isaiah 1 /Luke 14

Psalm 141:5 ~ Let the righteous smite me; it shall be a kindness: and let him reprove me; it shall be an excellent oil, which shall not break my head.

Proverbs 27:5,6 ~ Open rebuke is better than secret love. Faithful are the wounds of a friend.

Isaiah 1:18 ~ Come now, and let us reason together, saith the LORD: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool.

Luke 14:8,9,43 ~ Sit not down in the highest room… a more honorable than thou… Give this Man place… whosoever…  forsaketh not all that he hath… cannot be my disciple.

May God forbid us by His grace

To sit with pride or stand aloof,

For Christ deserves the highest place

As we are humbled by reproof.

So come now, let us rightly reason

So that our hearts may be restored

To honor Christ in every season

As our Redeemer and our Lord.

His Passion He Portrayed

Read:  Psalm 140 / Proverbs 26 / Song 8 /Luke 13

Psalm 140:7 ~ O GOD the Lord, the strength of my salvation, thou hast covered my head in the day of battle.

Proverbs 26:2 ~ As the bird by wandering, as the swallow by flying, so the curse causeless shall not come.

Song of Solomon 8:7 ~ Many waters cannot quench love, neither can the floods drown it: if a man would give all the substance of his house for love, it would utterly be contemned.

Luke 13:34 ~ O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, which killest the prophets, and stonest them that are sent unto thee; how often would I have gathered thy children together, as a hen doth gather her brood under her wings, and ye would not!

Behold the passion Christ portrayed,

Who fought the battle in our place!

Behold the curse upon Him laid

That He might bless us with His grace!

The waters could not quench His love

When billows crashed upon Him then,

For Christ descended from above

To cover sinners “as a hen.”

Internally Inspected

Read:  Psalm 139 / Proverbs 25 / Song 7 /Luke 12

Psalm 139:23,24 ~ Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts: and see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.

Proverbs 25:28 ~ He that hath no rule over his own spirit is like a city that is broken down, and without walls.

Song of Solomon 7:12 ~ Let us get up early to the vineyards; let us see if the vine flourish, whether the tender grape appear… the pomegranates bud forth: there will I give thee my loves.

Luke 12:31,34 ~ Seek ye the kingdom of God; and all these things shall be added unto you… For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.

The Lord inspects my every thought;

He searches me internally.

He tells me things that I knew not

And shows me what I could not see.

I hear my wise Reprover speak

When He has searched my heart within

To make me strong when I am weak

And thus, triumphant over sin.

Greater Glory

Posted in advance for April 24, 2024

Read:  Psalm 138 / Proverbs 24 / Song 6 /Luke 11

Psalm 138:4,5 ~ All the kings of the earth shall praise thee, O LORD, when they hear the words of thy mouth...they shall sing in the ways of the LORD: for great is the glory of the LORD.

Proverbs 24:15,16 ~ Lay not wait, O wicked man, against the dwelling of the righteous; spoil not his resting place: for a just man falleth seven times, and riseth up again.

Song of Solomon 6:3 ~ I am my beloved's…my beloved is mine.

Luke 11:31 ~ The queen of the south… came from the utmost parts of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and, behold, a greater than Solomon is here.

The kings of earth shall sing the praise

Which shall recount our Savior’s story.

We honor heroes and their ways,

But Jesus Christ has greater glory.

We are the object of His love,
As in the Song of Solomon.

He is our Hero from above!

There is none greater; no not one!

Sing of our Savior

Read:  Psalm 137 / Proverbs 23 / Song 5 /Luke 10

Psalm 137:4 ~ How shall we sing the LORD'S song in a strange land?

Proverbs 23:26 ~ My son, give me thine heart, and let thine eyes observe my ways.

Song of Solomon 5:16 ~ His mouth is most sweet: yea, he is altogether lovely. This is my beloved, and this is my friend, O daughters of Jerusalem.

Luke 10:41,42 ~ And Jesus answered and said unto her, Martha, Martha, thou art careful and troubled about many things: But one thing is needful: and Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her.

The land is strange wherein we dwell,

Yet on our Savior, we depend.

We rightly sing that it is well,

For Christ is our unchanging Friend.

We sing because we fix our view

On Jesus Christ, our faithful Savior.

His mercies every day are new,

And He befriends us with His favor.

Mountain of Myrrh

Read:  Psalm 136 / Proverbs 22 / Song 4 /Luke 9

Psalm 136:23,24 ~ Who remembered us in our low estate: for his mercy endureth for ever: and hath redeemed us from our enemies: for his mercy endureth forever.

Proverbs 22:3 ~ A prudent man foreseeth the evil, and hideth himself: but the simple pass on, and are punished.

Song of Solomon 4:6,7,15 ~ Until the day break, and the shadows flee away, I will get me to the mountain of myrrh, and to the hill of frankincense. Thou art all fair, my love; there is no spot in thee… a fountain… a well of living water.

Luke 9:56 ~ The Son of man is not come to destroy men's lives, but to save them.

Thank God that He remembered us

When Jesus died love so great

And then was raised victorious

To save us from our lost estate!

The love that led Him to that mountain

Of sorrow’s myrrh and frankincense

Extends His blessings as a fountain

And hides our soul in His defense!

His War He Won

Read:  Psalm 135 / Proverbs 21 / Song 3 /Luke 8

Psalm 135:13 ~ Thy name, O LORD, endureth forever; and thy memorial, O LORD, throughout all generations.

Proverbs 21:31 ~ The horse is prepared against the day of battle: but safety is of the LORD.

Song of Solomon 3:4 ~ I found him whom my soul loveth: I held him, and would not let him go.

Luke 8:39 ~ Return to thine own house, and shew how great things God hath done unto thee.

We shall remember Jesus Christ

Through every coming generation,

Recalling He was sacrificed

As we declare His great salvation.

We are commissioned now to go

And show His war that He has won,

That everyone may thereby know

The great things that our Lord has done.

Christ my Creator

Read:  Psalm 134 / Proverbs 20 / Song 2 /Luke 7

Psalm 134:1-3 ~ Behold, bless ye the LORD, all ye servants of the LORD, which by night stand in the house of the LORD. Lift up your hands in the sanctuary, and bless the LORD. The LORD that made heaven and earth bless thee out of Zion.

Proverbs 20:12 ~ The hearing ear, and the seeing eye, the LORD hath made even both of them.

Song of Solomon 2:4 ~ He brought me to the banqueting house, and his banner over me was love.

Luke 7:44-47 ~ I entered into thine house, thou gavest me no water for my feet… Thou gavest me no kiss… My head with oil thou didst not anoint: but this woman hath anointed my feet with ointment… for she loved much.

I’ll bless the Lord who came to die,

Who is my Savior and Creator!

My hearing ear and seeing eye

Has searched, and there is no one greater!

Christ brings me daily to His table

And there displays His wondrous love.

The fool’s attraction to a fable

Is far removed from things above.

Pleasant Portraits

Read:  Psalm 133 / Proverbs 19 / Song 1 /Luke 6

Psalm 133:1-3 ~ Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity! It is like the precious ointment… as the dew of Hermon… for there the LORD commanded the blessing, even life for evermore.

Proverbs 19:12 ~ The king's wrath is as the roaring of a lion; but his favor is as dew upon the grass.

Song of Solomon 1:3,4 ~ Because of the savor of thy good ointments thy name is as ointment poured forth… Draw me…  we will be glad and rejoice in thee, we will remember thy love.

Luke 6:5 ~ And he said unto them, That the Son of man is Lord also of the sabbath.

How good and pleasant are the scenes

That have portrayed our wondrous Savior!

The high priest for us intervenes,

And heaven’s dew descends with favor!

Our hearts are set on things above

Since Jesus is our Sabbath Rest.

How gladly we recall His love:

He bore the curse for those He blessed!

Glorifying God

Read:  Psalm 132 / Proverbs 18 / Eccl. 12 /Luke 5

Psalm 132:4,5 ~ I will not give sleep to mine eyes, or slumber to mine eyelids, until I find out a place for the LORD, an habitation for the mighty God of Jacob.

Proverbs 18:1,2 ~ Through desire a man, having separated himself, seeketh and intermeddleth with all wisdom. A fool hath no delight in understanding, but that his heart may discover itself.

Ecclesiastes 12:1 ~ Remember now thy Creator in the days of thy youth, while the evil days come not, nor the years draw nigh, when thou shalt say, I have no pleasure in them;

Luke 5:32 ~ I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.

Our goal of glorifying God

Should be our growing, glad desire.

It matters not what men applaud;

The goal of knowing God is higher.

The aim of seeking our Creator

Should be remembered in our youth.

There is no purpose that is greater

Nor sweeter liberating truth!

Haughty or Humble?

Read:  Psalm 131 / Proverbs 17 / Eccl. 11 /Luke 4

Psalm 131:1 ~ LORD, my heart is not haughty, nor mine eyes lofty: neither do I exercise myself in great matters, or in things too high for me.

Proverbs 17:3 ~ The fining pot is for silver, and the furnace for gold: but the LORD trieth the hearts.

Ecclesiastes 11:5 ~ As thou knowest not what is the way of the spirit, nor how the bones do grow in the womb of her that is with child: even so thou knowest not the works of God who maketh all.

Luke 4:18,19 ~ The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor… to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised, to preach the acceptable year of the Lord.

If we are haughty or are humble,

Our life shall soon display that fact,

For we shall either stand or stumble

When trials come and we react.

If we correctly view creation,

We shall be humbled and amazed.

Still more, as we survey salvation,

Our Savior rightly shall be praised!

God's Gracious Gospel

Read:  Psalm 130 / Proverbs 16 / Eccl. 10 /Luke 3

Psalm 130:3,4 ~ If thou, LORD, shouldest mark iniquities, O Lord, who shall stand? But there is forgiveness with thee, that thou mayest be feared.

Proverbs 16:6,24 ~ By mercy and truth iniquity is purged…by the fear of the LORD men depart from evil… Pleasant words are as an honeycomb, sweet to the soul…health to the bones.

Ecclesiastes 10:12 ~ The words of a wise man's mouth are gracious; but the lips of a fool will swallow up himself.

Luke 3:4 ~ As it is written in the book of the words of Esaias the prophet, saying, The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.

God’s gracious Gospel makes us wise

And makes us messengers as well.

We hold the truth that opens eyes

With urgent tidings that we tell.

By grace and truth our sins are purged;

By godly fear we turn from sin.

By gracious words are sinners urged

To come to Christ and let Him in.

We Wisely Work

Read:  Psalm 129 / Proverbs 15 / Eccl. 9 /Luke 2

Psalm 129:4 ~ The LORD is righteous: he hath cut asunder the cords of the wicked.

Proverbs 15:28 ~ The heart of the righteous studieth to answer: but the mouth of the wicked poureth out evil things.

Ecclesiastes 9:10 ~ Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with thy might; for there is no work, nor device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in the grave, whither thou goest.

Luke 2:10,11 ~ And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, which is Christ the Lord.

We wisely work with all our might,

For God has cut away the cords

Of Satan’s snare that held us tight;

We are redeemed!  We are the Lord’s!

Our time is short before the grave

To bring glad tidings to the lost

As we declare that Christ can save,

For He has paid redemption’s cost.

How Healthy!

Read:  Psalm 128 / Proverbs 14 / Eccl. 8 /Luke 1

Psalm 128:1 ~ Blessed is every one that feareth the LORD; that walketh in his ways.

Proverbs 14:26,27 ~ In the fear of the LORD is strong confidence… a place of refuge. The fear of the LORD is a fountain of life, to depart from the snares of death.

Ecclesiastes 8:12,13 ~ I know that it shall be well with them that fear God… but it shall not be well with the wicked… which are as a shadow; because he feareth not before God.

Luke 1:49,50 ~ For he that is mighty hath done to me great things; and holy is his name. And his mercy is on them that fear him from generation to generation.

How healthy is the godly fear

That strengthens us with confidence,

Assuring us that Christ is near

As we rejoice in His defense!

We are assured it shall be well

With all who love and fear the Savior

Who died to rescue us from hell

And lives to save us by His favor.

Work with Wisdom

Read:  Psalm 127 / Proverbs 13 / Eccl. 7 /Mark 16

Psalm 127:1 ~ Except the LORD build the house, they labor in vain that build it: except the LORD keep the city, the watchman waketh but in vain.

Proverbs 13:15 ~ Good understanding giveth favor: but the way of transgressors is hard.

Ecclesiastes 7:19 ~ Wisdom strengtheneth the wise more than ten mighty men which are in the city.

Mark 16:15,20 ~ And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature…. And they went forth, and preached everywhere, the Lord working with them, and confirming the word with signs following. Amen.

There is a way to work in vain

And lose a lasting, true reward.

The psalmist surely made this plain:

We vainly work without the Lord.

Such understanding guides behavior:

We work with wisdom and with might

When we are working with the Savior

And we are pleasing in His sight.

Proof is in the Prophecy

Read:  Psalm 126 / Proverbs 12 / Eccl. 6 /Mark 15

Psalm 126:6 ~ He that goeth forth and weepeth, bearing precious seed, shall doubtless come again with rejoicing, bringing his sheaves with him.

Proverbs 12:20 ~ Deceit is in the heart of them that imagine evil: but to the counselors of peace is joy.

Ecclesiastes 6:12 ~ Who knoweth what is good for man in this life, all the days of his… life which he spendeth as a shadow? for who can tell a man what shall be after him under the sun?

Mark 15:28 ~ And the scripture was fulfilled, which saith, And he was numbered with the transgressors.

We bring glad tidings of salvation;

This is the precious seed we sow

As we extend God’s invitation

With evidence we clearly show.

The proof is in the prophecy

That Christ would rise just as He said.

Let us proclaim with certainty

That He is risen from the dead!
