Error of Ease

“Our soul is exceedingly filled with the scorning of those that are at ease, and with the contempt of the proud” (Psalm 123:4).  “Good understanding giveth favor: but the way of transgressors is hard” (Proverbs 13:15).  “If we receive the witness of men, the witness of God is greater: for this is the witness of God which He hath testified of His Son… that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in His Son.  He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life” (1 John 5:9-12).

The evidence through all creation
Is pointing to our God and Savior.
Yet scorners make their declaration
As if the facts were in their favor!

We hear the scorn of those at ease
And condescension of the proud,
But this will change when God decrees
That every knee to Him be bowed.

The understanding that God gives
Extends His favor to the humble.
How fearfully the scorner lives
In darkness where the lost will stumble.

There’s sorrow at the end of mirth
That cloaks an empty life with laughter.
The passing pleasures of this earth
Forsake the lost forever after.

Let those at ease consider, then,
Who mock the truth of our Creator:
They trust the witness of mere men,
But evidence from God is greater!

There surely is no greater error
Than tossing God’s great grace aside!
Let ease be now exchanged for terror
With humbleness instead of pride!

The evidence in all God made
Declares the glory of our Lord.
What greater proof could be displayed
That God alone should be adored?

The evidence of prophecy
Which Jesus Christ our Lord fulfilled
Proclaims the truth that makes us free,
And on this Corner Stone we build!

The error, Lord, is surely plain
In those at ease who go on scorning:
They hear the Gospel with disdain
And still resist Your Spirit’s warning.

Lord, help us reach those who will hear
The message of Your saving grace
And turn from ease to godly fear
To find in You their Hiding Place!
