Comparing Compassion

"Yea, the sparrow hath found an house, and the swallow a nest for herself, where she may lay her young, even Thine altars, O LORD of hosts, my King, and my God" (Psalm 84:3).  "Can a woman forget her sucking child, that she should not have compassion on the son of her womb?  Yea, they may forget, yet will I not forget thee.  Behold, I have graven thee upon the palms of My hands" (Isaiah 49:15,16).

How great is our Savior's compassion!
There's nothing with it to compare.
Yet God faintly shows us its fashion:
Consider the birds of the air.

The sparrows and swallows will nest
And lay down their young which they feed.
Yet Christ has provided our rest:
His altar (the cross!) meets our need.

Consider a mother's affection
Who tenderly nurses with love,
Yet Christ far exceeds this reflection,
Who intercedes for us above.

O Lord, when comparing these things,
Our heart more and more understands.
Your matchless compassion now brings
Assurance we're safe in Your hands!
