Wasted Warning

“Every man and beast which shall be found in the field, and shall not be brought home, the hail shall come down upon them, and they shall die.  He that feared the word of the LORD among the servants of Pharaoh made his servants and his cattle flee into the houses:  and he that regarded not the word of the LORD left his servants and his cattle in the field” (Exodus 9:19-21).  “Blessed is the man that feareth the LORD, that delighteth greatly in His commandments… his heart is established, he shall not be afraid” (Psalm 112:1,8).  “Good understanding giveth favor: but the way of transgressors is hard” (Proverbs 13:15).

There is a strange insanity
That wastes the warning God imparts.
The Lord has warned humanity,
Yet many harden yet their hearts.

It’s not as if God hasn’t spoken
Or promised judgments were concealed.
His prophecies were never broken;
The wrath of God has been revealed.

How clearly this was on display
When Moses warned with God’s command
To find a refuge on that day
When hail would destroy the land.

The people who did not regard
The Word of God which warned of hail,
Then found the outcome very hard,
For what God promised did not fail.

How blest are those with reverence
For God Almighty and His Word
In view of so much evidence
That renders unbelief absurd!

How good, O Lord, is understanding
Which You have promised to provide
To those who turn at Your commanding
To find in You a place to hide!

O Lord, Your Word contains these lessons
To draw the lost with gracious warning
And thereby turn them from transgressions
And from the folly of their scorning.

We thank You, Lord, that You have tasted
The scourge of death for every man;
O may Your warning not be wasted
As we declare salvation’s plan!
