Nurturing vs. Neglecting

“Neglect not the gift that is in thee… Meditate upon these things; give thyself wholly to them; that thy profiting may appear to all.  Take heed unto thyself, and unto the doctrine; continue in them: for in doing this thou shalt both save thyself, and them that hear thee” (1 Timothy 4:14-16).

There is a gift that God will place
In every one who trusts the Lord,
Equipping them with special grace
Which may be nurtured – or ignored.

The only right response to God
Is full surrender of our hearts!
Though we are servants who are flawed,
We hold this gift that He imparts.

There is a calling we will find
As we are living for God’s pleasure.
The gift we have is thus designed
To fit our call in perfect measure.

We meditate upon these things
So that we may be consecrated.
As servants of the King of kings
Our calling should be demonstrated.

We see the benefits expected
When we have nurtured what God gave,
For we ourselves are thus protected,
And others God shall thereby save.

O may we be completely given
To all of God’s provided favor,
And to this end may we be driven:
To glorify our Lord and Savior!

Lord, thank You for so great salvation
And for the calling that You give.
Revive our hearts with consecration
To live the way we ought to live.

O Lord, You bought us with a price,
And therefore we are not our own,
So as a living sacrifice,
Our purpose is to make You known.

O teach us, Lord, as our Defender,
To use the gift we thus protect!
We nurture by our full surrender
The gift we otherwise neglect.
