Tragic Treasures

"I know that Thou wilt bring me to death, and to the house appointed for all living" (Job 30:23).  "[Jesus] spake a parable unto them, saying, The ground of a certain rich man brought forth plentifully:  and he thought within himself, saying…  I will say to my soul, Soul, thou hast much goods laid up for many years; take thine ease, eat, drink, and be merry.  But God said unto him, Thou fool, this night thy soul shall be required of thee: then whose shall those things be, which thou hast provided?" (Luke 12:16-20).

The days of our life are so few
Before we depart from this earth.
A fool only cares to pursue
The treasures of temporal worth.

A parable Jesus explained
Brought heaven's perspective to light,
For all of the wealth the fool gained
Was severed by death on that night.

Though well-meaning friends would applaud
His planning for years yet ahead,
His treasures were foolish to God
And forfeited when he was dead.

How tragic the treasures are, Lord,
Of rich men eternally lost,
Who neither esteem Your reward,
Nor will they consider the cost!
