"They remembered that God was their Rock... nevertheless they did flatter Him with their mouth, and they lied unto Him with their tongues. For their heart was not right with Him" (Psalm 78:35-37). "Nicodemus... came to Jesus by night, and said unto Him, Rabbi, we know that Thou art a teacher come from God: for no man can do these miracles that Thou doest, except God be with Him. Jesus answered... Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God" (John 3:1-3).
The Lord could see the fatal flaw
Behind the mask of those who lied.
Examining their hearts, He saw
Their flattery and sinful pride.
It is the heart that really matters;
The Lord cares not for eloquence.
Though He reproves the mouth that flatters,
He saves the sinner who repents.
When Nicodemus came to Christ,
His speech was not sufficient then,
For nothing else but this sufficed:
By grace he must be born again.
How flawed with flattery, O God,
Our hearts are so inclined to be!
Expose in us a heart thus flawed
And purge us with humility.
