Horse, Hawk, and Heart

"Hast thou given the horse strength?... Doth the hawk fly by thy wisdom?" (Job 39:19,26).  "My heart shall rejoice in Thy salvation" (Psalm 13:5).  "My son, if thou wilt receive My words... and apply thine heart to understanding... then shalt thou understand the fear of the LORD, and find the knowledge of God" (Proverbs 2:1-5).  "Hath not My hand made all these things?  Ye stiffnecked and uncircumcised in heart and ears, ye do always resist the Holy Ghost" (Acts 7:50,51).

Consider well the horse's strength,
And think upon the hawk that flies.
Explore the height, the breadth, and length
Of things in earth, the sea, and skies.

How wondrous is our Lord's creation
By which He teaches every heart,
Yet how much greater is salvation
Which God in mercy shall impart!

As we receive God's holy Word
And give our heart to understanding,
We'll comprehend what we have heard
As we apply what He's commanding.

Has not His hand made all these things:
The horse, the hawk, and heart of man?
Should not men fear the King of kings,
Rejoicing in salvation's plan?

How sadly this is not the case
As many brazenly resist
God's Spirit and His Word of grace,
Pretending He does not exist!

O Lord, we ponder all You made!
In everything we see Your power
And wisdom's handiwork displayed,
As in the horse, the hawk, and flower.

We cannot find rebellion there,
O Lord, in nature's things created,
But in the heart we find despair
Since Eden's garden was vacated.

Let horse, and hawk, and hearts You pardoned,
Lord, magnify Your excellence!
We pray that hearts which now are hardened
Would turn to You for their defense.
