Still Stirring

"Now while Paul waited for them at Athens, his spirit was stirred in him, when he saw the city wholly given to idolatry.... Then Paul stood in the midst of Mars' hill, and said, Ye men of Athens.... as I passed by, and beheld your devotions, I found an altar with this inscription, TO THE UNKNOWN GOD. Whom therefore ye ignorantly worship, Him declare unto you" (Acts 17:16,22,23).

Paul was in his spirit stirred
Looking out on Athens’ city,
Longing then to share God's Word,
To show to them His love and pity.

Athens was with darkness filled,
Infested with idolatry.
Paul stood then upon Mars' hill
To shed light on eternity.

An altar found with this description
Was quite fitting, yet was odd:
The altar bore this plain inscription,
Devoted "TO THE UNKNOWN GOD."

Paul laid hold of this admission
That they didn't know the Lord,
And then advanced the great commission,
Unveiling Christ, whom they ignored.

So may our God now likewise stir
And fill our hearts with holy zeal,
Remembering how lost we were,
And His compassion for them feel.
