"The fear of the Lord is the instruction of wisdom; and before honor is humility" (Proverbs 15:33). "And there was also a strife among them, which of them should be accounted the greatest. And He said unto them.... He that is greatest among you, let him be as the younger; and he that is chief, as he that does serve. For whether is greater, he that sitteth at meat, or he that serveth? Is not he that sitteth at meat? But I am among you as He that serveth" (Luke 22:24-27).
Who are the greatest of those in your midst?
It's those who are serving as Jesus our Lord.
No other standard shall ever exist
By which He'll assess us and thereby reward.
Therefore let all who would seek to be great
Be ready to serve as the younger in meekness.
Let all who would rise to a more honored state
Serve, with humility, others in weakness.
Teach us, O Lord, by observing Your life,
How to achieve Your example observed,
That we may be rid of vainglory and strife
As we, in Your likeness, have thus humbly served.
