Vanity, Vinegar, and Victory

"The LORD knoweth the thoughts of man, that they are vanity" (Psalm 94:11).  "Then saith Pilate unto Him... Knowest Thou not that I have power to crucify Thee, and have power to release Thee?  Jesus answered, Thou couldest have no power at all against Me, except it were given thee from above... Jesus knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the Scripture might be fulfilled, saith, I thirst... When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, He said, It is finished" (John 19:10-30).

How blindly does humanity
Discount the knowledge of our Lord!
The thoughts of man are vanity
When truth is willfully ignored.

When Pilate spoke with arrogance,
He did not know that Jesus knew
His vain and willful ignorance
So evident from heaven's view.

When Jesus had accomplished all,
He knew one prophecy remained:
He had refused the bitter gall,
But vinegar was yet ordained.

O Lord, our hearts are surely thrilled
To hear Your voice victorious,
When You knew all had been fulfilled,
Say "It is finished!" then for us!
