Fragrance of Favor

“For whoso findeth Me findeth life, and shall obtain favor of the LORD.  But he that sinneth against me wrongeth his own soul: all they that hate me love death” (Proverbs 8:35,36).  “Now thanks be unto God, which always causeth us to triumph in Christ, and maketh manifest the savor (ευωδια euodia, lit. good scent; fragrance) of His knowledge by us in every place.  For we are unto God a sweet savor of Christ, in them that are saved, and in them that perish: to the one we are the savor of death unto death; and to the other the savor of life unto life” (2 Corinthians 2:15,16).

In Christ we have obtained God’s favor
With sins removed and blessings full,
But those who yet despise the Savior
Embrace God’s wrath and wrong their soul!

The fragrance of God’s favor, thus,
Conveys the truth of Jesus Christ.
It is a savor sweet to us
Of our Redeemer sacrificed.

To those who yet reject our Lord,
His fragrance speaks of condemnation.
No wonder, then, it is abhorred
By those refusing His salvation!

We surely shouldn’t be surprised
When sinners don’t appreciate
The Gospel that they have despised
Which we to them communicate.

Thanks be to God that, nonetheless,
We triumph by Him in each place
Where He has sent us to confess
That He alone can save by grace.

O Lord, the fragrance of Your love
Has thrilled our soul with Your perfection.
Where You are seated now above
Is where we set our heart’s affection.

O Lord, until we’re home with You,
We manifest Your fragrant name
By all we think, and say, and do
To show Your favor without shame.
