Esau's Error

“Esau said… what profit shall this birthright do to me?… And he sold his birthright unto Jacob… and he did eat and drink, and rose up, and went his way: thus Esau despised his birthright” (Genesis 25:32-34).  “So they did eat, and were well filled: for He gave them their own desire… For all this they sinned still, and believed not for His wondrous works.  Therefore their days did he consume in vanity” (Psalm 78:29-33).  “Treasures of wickedness profit nothing: but righteousness delivereth from death… The blessing of the LORD, it maketh rich” (Proverbs 10:3,22).  “God, Who is rich in mercy, for His great love wherewith He loved us, even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ; by grace ye are saved” (Ephesians 2:4,5).

We hear the words that Esau said,
Whose words live on in infamy.
He sold his birthright to be fed,
Despising what he could not see.

There’s surely more than meets the eyes
Regarding Esau’s appetite.
The birthright that he would despise
Was greatly valued in God’s sight.

We see this attitude as well
In desert scenes when Israel lusted:
Though manna in the desert fell,
The Lord was neither thanked nor trusted.

Their appetite for something more
Than what the Lord from heaven sent
Is seen today when souls abhor
Our Lord, Who calls them to repent.

What profit is there from above?
Behold the riches of our Savior!
The Lord of heaven came in love
To thus extend to us favor!

What profit is there here below
In fleeting treasures that decay,
For death is coming, this we know,
And who delivers in that day?

Praise God!  The answer here is plain:
The Lord can save us by His grace!
The wise men sought Him not in vain,
And we may also seek His face!

Though souls today are dead in sins,
The Lord will give His life to those
Who trust Him; that’s when life begins!
That’s why He suffered, died, and rose!

All those who come to Jesus Christ
Shall find that He shall give them rest.
Our Lord was therefore sacrificed
To save those now forever blest.

O Lord, we see this right of birth
That You have purchased on the cross
To be of such surpassing worth,
All other gain now seems but loss.

O Lord, how much for us You cared;
We worship You with gratitude!
We see how greatly Esau erred;
O purge from us his attitude!
