Let them Leave!

“Jesus taketh Peter, James, and John his brother, and bringeth them up into an high mountain apart, and was transfigured before them: and His face did shine as the sun, and His raiment was white as the light.  And, behold, there appeared unto them Moses and Elias talking with Him.  Then answered Peter, and said unto Jesus, Lord, it is good for us to be here: if Thou wilt, let us make here three tabernacles; one for Thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elias.  While he yet spake, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them: and behold a voice out of the cloud, which said, This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased; hear ye Him… And when they had lifted up their eyes, they saw no man, save Jesus only” (Matthew 17:1-8).

That mountain scene was glorious
Where Moses and Elijah spoke,
Yet there’s a caution here for us,
As well as Peter who awoke.

They saw our Savior shining then,
Beholding His transfiguration.
They saw that prophets were just men
Who also needed His salvation.

Let Moses and the prophets fade
Foreshadowing what Christ would do,
Yet let the patterns they portrayed
Exalt the Savior in our view!

Yes, let them leave, for they are done!
The Law’s demands have been fulfilled
By Christ ALONE, God’s precious Son,
The Lamb of God for sinner’s killed.

The Father therefore made this known
(As Peter’s speech abruptly finished),
That they should hear His Son ALONE;
Let every other be diminished!

The Law and prophets have their place:
In this respect they are not halted
As they foreshow God’s truth and grace,
That Jesus Christ may be exalted.

Yet now it’s time to hear the Savior,
For by His voice our fear departs.
The Law could not impart His favor,
But He speaks peace to trembling hearts.

Upon that mountain, Lord, renown,
Recalling then what Peter saw,
We thank You, Lord, that YOU came down,
Instead of Moses with the Law!

O Father, we have heard Your voice,
And Your commandment we receive
To hear Your Son as we rejoice
To hold to HIM as others leave!
