“If My people which are called by My name, shall
humble themselves and pray, and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways,
then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their
land” (2 Chronicles 7:14).
Looking
back across the years there surely was a day
America
was not ashamed and not afraid to say:
“America, America, God shed His grace on
thee!”
We
gratefully acknowledged it was God Who made us free.
But
the glory of those former days is fading from our view;
It
seems as if we can’t remember what we surely knew.
Lord,
give us eyes to see again and hearts to understand,
And
ears to hear and heed Your voice that You may heal our land.
Looking
now across our land, what troubling things we see!
America
is scarred with crime and immorality;
The
sacrifice of unborn children rages like a flood.
How
long can God retrain His wrath and not avenge their blood?
Marriages
and families are broken every day.
Our
children learn that promises are made to cast away,
And
love is just a word the means our sinful, selfish lust.
Revive
us, Lord, to own again the words: “In
God we trust!”
How
far we’ve gone from You, O Lord, like sheep have gone astray!
Look
down from heaven with compassion, cast us not away.
Restore
to us a righteousness that glorifies Your name.
We
own our guiltiness, O Lord, acknowledging our shame.
Turn
us again as in the days Josiah came to reign.
Lord,
send Your Spirit that we may not live our lives in vain.
Before
the shout when Jesus comes to gather all His own,
Revive
us Lord with softened hearts replacing hearts of stone.
