Misguided Multitudes

“Men of the world… have their portion in this life… As for me, I will behold Thy face in righteousness: I shall be satisfied, when I awake, with Thy likeness” (Psalm 17:14,15).  “The hope of the righteous shall be gladness: but the expectation of the wicked shall perish” (Proverbs 10:28).  “And God said to Jonah… Should not I spare Nineveh, that great city, wherein are… persons that cannot discern between their right hand and their left hand?” (Jonah 4:9-11).  “So mightily grew the word of God and prevailed…. And the same time there arose no small stir about that way… Some therefore cried one thing, and some another: for the assembly was confused; and the more part knew not wherefore they were come together” (Acts 19:20-32).

How fleeting is life on this earth!
How quickly our portion is spent,
And what are its luxuries worth
To those who refuse to repent?

Their wealth is a deadly distraction
Which turns them away from the Lord!
How vain is the short satisfaction
When heaven is thereby ignored!

Yet David would be satisfied
In heaven where he would awaken,
For this is the reason Christ died:
That grace by our faith may be taken.

The hope of those trusting Christ
Through Him is eternal salvation.
Religion has never sufficed:
God calls us into a relation!

But misguided multitudes still
Are by their religions confused,
Believing whatever they will,
By many distractions amused.

Yet some will be wise and repent,
And so they shall find God’s compassion,
Like those to whom Jonah was sent
And all others saved in this fashion.

In Paul’s day the Word of God grew,
And multitudes therefore were stirred.
With such evidence in clear view,
They all should have trusted God’s Word.

But sadly this wasn’t the case,
For many held on to confusion
And welcomed not God’s saving grace,
Despising it as an intrusion.

O Lord, we can see it today:
The multitudes still are misguided!
The Gospel is still thrust away;
Your messengers also are chided.

Lord Jesus, we’re looking above
Advancing Your cause here below,
Declaring Your message of love
Wherever You call us to go.

We’re guided, O Lord, by Your smile,
And not by the multitude’s scorn.
We know we have just a short while
To preach to the lost whom You warn.
