Words for the Walk

"God spake all these words, saying... Ye have seen that I have talked with you from heaven" (Exodus 20:1,22).  "The words of the LORD are pure words: as silver tried in a furnace of earth, purified seven times.  Thou shalt keep them, O LORD, Thou shalt preserve them from this generation forever" (Psalm 12:6,7).  "Thy Father's commandment... shall lead thee... keep thee... talk with thee" (Proverbs 6:20-22).  "I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus" (Philippians 3:14). 

When God talked from heaven to man,

He said what man needed to hear

To walk in the way of His plan

And purify him by His fear. 

Thank God that His words are preserved

To lead, keep, and talk with us still! 

When we from His purpose have swerved,

He guides us back into His will. 

The Lord knows how often we walk

Like sheep that are going astray. 

How graciously yet He will talk

With words that reprove us today. 

Your words, Lord, now shine in the dark, 

So that we may walk without falling

As we're pressing on toward the mark 

Beheld in the prize of Your calling.  

Fearless Foundation

"Ye have seen what I did unto the Egyptians, and how I bare you on eagles' wings, and brought you unto Myself" (Exodus 19:4).  "In the LORD put I my trust: how say ye to my soul, Flee as a bird to your mountain?... If the foundations be destroyed, what can the righteous do?... The LORD'S throne is in heaven: His eyes behold, His eyelids try, the children of men" (Psalm 11:1-4).  "For the ways of man are before the eyes of the LORD" (Proverbs 5:21).  "Jesus Christ is Lord" (Philippians 2:11). 

Like eaglets on the eagle's wings,

The Lord describes His sure salvation. 

As Lord of lords and King of kings,

He has established His foundation. 

Since His foundation is His throne,

Since all His promises are true,

And Jesus Christ is Lord alone,

We ask:  What can the wicked do? 

As Pharaoh was before God's eyes,

And God restrained his wicked ways,

The wrath of man may sometimes rise,

But only that which gives God praise. 

O Lord, on Your foundation sure,

Our fears are vanquished by Your love. 

Though kingdoms fall, You shall endure,

And we shall dwell with You above. 

Presumptuous Pride

"Moses told his father in law...  how the LORD delivered them... And Jethro said, Blessed be the LORD, who hath delivered you... for in the thing wherein they dealt proudly He was above them" (Exodus 18:8-11).  "The wicked, through the pride of his countenance... hath said in his heart, I shall not be moved" (Psalm 10:4-6).  "The way of the wicked is as darkness: they know not at what they stumble" (Proverbs 4:19).  "Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of His might" (Ephesians 6:10). 

When Pharaoh stood up in his pride,

He vainly thought he would prevail

Against those on Jehovah's side,

Since he presumed he could not fail. 

The wicked still presumes today 

That he shall never be reproved. 

Within his heart, God hears him say

So proudly, "I shall not be moved." 

The proud may boast, but not forever,

For in the end he shall be humble. 

Though he may think that he is clever,

By his presumption, he shall stumble. 

You've shown us, Lord, that pride is wrong,

Destructive, and presumptuous,

For in You only, we are strong,

And in Your might, victorious.  

 

Boldness of our Banner

"Moses built an altar, and called the name of it Jehovah-nissi (Heb. The LORD My Banner)... because the LORD hath sworn that the LORD will have war with Amalek from generation to generation" (Exodus 17:15.16).  "They that know Thy name will put their trust in Thee: for Thou, LORD, hast not forsaken them that seek Thee" (Psalm 9:9,10).  "The LORD shall be thy Confidence" (Proverbs 3:26).  " Awake thou that sleepest... because the days are evil" (Ephesians 5:14-16). 

There was an altar Moses named

When Amalek against him warred. 

"Jehovah-Nissi" thus proclaimed

Their trusted banner was the LORD. 

In Christ it is the same today:

We know we'll never be forsaken.

Our banner raised is on display

With boldness that is not mistaken. 

The LORD shall be our Confidence 

Though wars around us do not cease,

For Christ Himself is our Defense,

Our Banner, and our perfect Peace. 

The boldness of our banner, Lord,

As we awake in evil days,

Is in Your Word, the Spirit's sword, 

Upheld with prayer and grateful praise.  

 

Merciful Manna

"The children of Israel did eat manna forty years, until they came to a land inhabited" (Exodus 16:35).  "What is man, that Thou art mindful of him?  And the son of man, that Thou visitest him?" (Psalm 8:4).  "The LORD giveth wisdom... that thou mayest walk in the way of good men" (Proverbs 2:6,20).  "But unto every one of us is given grace according to the measure of the gift of Christ... for the edifying of the body of Christ" (Ephesians 4:7,12). 

The manna that God had extended,

Which came down from heaven above

Until Israel's journey had ended,

Exhibits God's wonderful love. 

The question concerning man's worth

Was raised in the light of such care

That God demonstrates in the earth,

So mindful, He'd visit us there. 

As manna was given back then,

God teaches our hearts every day

To walk in the way of good men,

As we hear His Word and obey. 

How merciful, Lord, is Your measure

Of grace for our edification,

Like manna each day that we treasure 

As gifts You provide with salvation!  

Hero and Healer

"The LORD is my Strength and Song, and He is become my Salvation... I am the LORD that healeth thee" (Exodus 15:2,26).  "My defense is of God, which saveth the upright in heart" (Psalm 7:10).  "Whoso hearkeneth unto Me shall dwell safely, and shall be quiet from fear of evil" (Proverbs 1:33).  "Know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge, that ye might be filled with all the fullness of God" (Ephesians 3:19). 

The Lord is our Strength and our Song,

And He has become our Salvation,

Our Hero and Helper so strong,

Who died for our justification. 

We rest in our Savior's defense,

Who saved us at such a great cost. 

Each sinner who truly repents,

From death into new life has crossed. 

All glory belongs to our Savior

Who did what we never could do! 

He quiets our hearts by His favor

With mercies each day that are new. 

Lord, You are the Hero who saves

And heals the souls of Your own,

With love that the broken heart craves

And grace You've abundantly shown.
