“Cease, my son, to hear the instruction that causeth to err from the words of knowledge. An ungodly witness scorneth judgment… Judgments are prepared for scorners” (Proverbs 19:27-29). “Herod, arrayed in royal apparel, sat upon his throne, and made an oration unto them. And the people gave a shout, saying, It is the voice of a god, and not of a man. And immediately the angel of the Lord smote him, because he gave not God the glory: and he was eaten of worms, and gave up the ghost. But the Word of God grew and multiplied” (Acts 12:21-24).
How
loud are the cynics today!
How
many now lend them their ear!
How
proud are the words that they say
With
scorn as their judgment draws near!
The
Lord is aware of the scorning
Of
all who have chosen their path.
His
Spirit reproves them with warning,
And
bids them to flee from His wrath.
We
see this in Herod the king,
Who
gloried when men would applaud,
Whose
lofty oration would bring
The
shout that he must be a god!
But
Herod was only a man
Who
borrowed from God every breath.
His
life had a very short span,
As
worms then thus hastened his death.
For
such is the counsel of fools,
And
such is the cynic’s conclusion,
Acknowledging
not that God rules,
Deceived
by their hopeless confusion.
How
different the Word of God is
Declaring
the Gospel of peace!
God
guards every word that is His;
The
counsel of cynics will cease.
O
Lord, we give thanks for Your Word
Proclaiming
the way of salvation!
We
pray that the truth may by heard
Instead
of the cynic’s oration!
