Spurred to Speak

“The LORD said unto David, Go… and save Keilah… So David saved the inhabitants of Keilah” (1 Samuel 23:2-5).  “My soul hath long dwelt with him that hateth peace.  I am for peace: but when I speak, they are for war” (Psalm 120:6,7).  “Open thy mouth for the dumb in the cause of all such as are appointed to destruction” (Proverbs 31:8).  ”Not seeking mine own profit, but the profit of many, that they may be saved” (1 Corinthians 10:33).

We have no power of our own
To fight the battles of the Lord,
But He gives grace to make Him own
With His own Word, His Spirit’s sword.

The Lord told David “Go and save”
The people who were in distress.
To this commandment David clave;
He needed nothing more or less.

Are not we likewise also spurred
To speak to those who don’t have peace?
We’re called to GO and preach God’s Word,
Though others tell us we should cease.

We speak to show salvation’s path
Escaping Satan’s great seduction.
We cry to souls to turn from wrath
To Christ who saves us from destruction.

Not for our profit do we speak,
But for the souls whom Christ would win.
We plead with souls to humbly seek
The Lord who saves us from our sin!

We thank You, Lord, for Your command
To preach to souls with Your desire
As You stretch forth Your saving hand
To save them from the lake of fire.

Preserve us, Lord, from apathy,
And spur us on to speak for You,
Investing in eternity
By all we think, and say, and do.

New Necessity

“My tongue shall speak of Thy Word… I have longed for Thy salvation, O LORD; and Thy law is my delight.” (Psalm 119:172,174).  “Every word of God is pure: He is a Shield unto them that put their trust in Him” (Proverbs 30:5).  “Necessity is laid upon me; yea, woe is unto me, if I preach not the Gospel!... A dispensation of the Gospel is committed unto me” (1 Corinthians 9:16,17).

Necessity is laid on me
That I had never known before.
The truth I have which makes me free,
Has made me an ambassador!

Before I knew of God’s salvation
My heart was plagued each day with dread
As I, with fearful contemplation,
Drew near eternity ahead.

Eternity can be explained
In terms of endless destinies,
And now, by grace, I am constrained
To preach the Gospel’s certainties!

For  every word of God is pure,
And all who trust Him, He will shield.
His promise always shall endure
Which in His Gospel is revealed.

So as a steward of God’s Word,
Shall I be silent?  No!  I must
Declare the Gospel that I heard!
I have received a sacred trust!

O Lord, Your law is my delight,
Which shows my sin, yet also grace!
I see how You have fought my fight
To thus become my Hiding Place!

Lord, here am I!  I hear Your call,
This new necessity You gave.
Since You have tasted death for all,
I’ll plead with souls You long to save.

Accountable to the Almighty

“I have kept Thy precepts and Thy testimonies: for all my ways are before Thee” (Psalm 119:168).  “He, that being often reproved hardeneth his neck, shall suddenly be destroyed, and that without remedy. The fear of man bringeth a snare: but whoso putteth his trust in the LORD shall be safe.  Many seek the ruler's favor; but every man's judgment cometh from the LORD” (Proverbs 29:1,25,26).  “But to us there is but one God, the Father, of whom are all things, and we in Him; and one Lord Jesus Christ, by whom are all things, and we by Him” (1 Corinthians 8:6).

Accountability to God
Will surely guide our ways aright.
It matters not if none applaud
When we are pleasing in His sight.

The fear of man will bring a snare
And rob us of our confidence.
We ought to cast on God our care
And trust the Lord for His defense.

Though many do not realize
That they shall stand before the Lord,
The truth remains that fools despise,
Which they have willfully ignored.

The one who often is reproved,
And yet his neck is hardened still,
Shall one day see his hope removed,
Destroyed, at last, by his own will.

Almighty God, our King of kings,
We thank You for Your gracious favor
That we have found beneath Your wings
As You are watching our behavior.

We live our life accountably,
Almighty Lord, to You alone.
In You we’ve found our remedy
With grace extended from Your throne!

Almighty Savior, in this place
Where hearts are made accountable,
We preach the Gospel of Your grace,
The only refuge for the soul!

Sureness of Shortness

There is but a step between me and death” (1 Samuel 20:3).  “Thy Word is true from the beginning: and every one of Thy righteous judgments endureth forever” (Psalm 119:60).  “They that seek the LORD understand all things” (Proverbs 28:5).  “But this I say, brethren, the time is short… use this world, as not abusing it: for the fashion of this world passeth away” (1 Corinthians 7:29-31).

How frail is this fleeting life
Which is sustained from breath to breath!
We’re cut off soon as with a knife;
There’s but a step between our death.

In contrast to this life so frail,
The Word of God endures forever!
Its promises shall never fail
With blessings time nor foe can sever!

By seeking Christ, we understand
His Sovereign order in all things.
Praise God!  Our times are in His hand
Who rules supreme as King of kings.

We should remember, nonetheless,
Our time is very short on earth,
And every moment we possess
Should be redeemed for what it’s worth.

O Lord, we see this world’s fashion
Is like a vapor in the steam,
Yet we are called to have compassion
On souls that You would yet redeem.

We  know, Lord, that our life is short
And our eternity is long.
We know the Gospel’s true report,
And every other way is wrong.

Lord, in this sureness, make us wise
To show the shortness of our days,
To preach the truth that opens eyes,
And to make known Your saving ways.

Price and Preeminence

“He did put his life in his hand… and the LORD wrought a great salvation” (1 Samuel 19:5).  “What?  Know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?  For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's” (1 Corinthians 6:19,20).

As David, the shepherd boy, stood
With courage before his great foe,
He foreshadowed Jesus who would
Deliver to Satan His blow.

Our Lord put His life in His hand,
For this was the price of salvation.
He satisfied every demand
To grant us His justification.

Our Savior thus counted the cost!
He purchased our souls with a price:
He laid down His life for the lost;
How great was our Lord’s sacrifice!

Since we are redeemed as His own,
Indwelt by our Lord’s Holy Spirit,
We glorify God and make known
The Gospel to those who will hear it.

Your temple, O Lord, is within
Each heart that will open the door,
As You, by Your grace, enter in
To dwell in our hearts evermore.

Lord, come now, and have Your own way
Since You paid the price for each soul.
Come reign with preeminent sway,
As gladly we give You control.
