"I am a stranger in the earth: hide not Thy commandments from me" (Psalm 119:19). "Behold, the days come, saith the Lord GOD, that I will send a famine in the land, not a famine of bread, nor thirst for water, but of hearing the words of the LORD: and they shall wander from sea to sea, and from the north even to the east, they shall run to and fro to seek the Word of the LORD, and shall not find it" (Amos 8:11,12).
There is a famine in the land,
Yet, sadly, many haven't heard!
They search, but will not understand:
It is the famine of God's Word.
They wander, searching to and fro
From north to east and sea to sea,
And ever learning, never know
The truth that would have set them free.
How fearful is the sinner's dearth
That starves his soul and blinds his eyes!
How temporary is his mirth
Replaced by terror when he dies!
It may be hard to take it in,
Yet it is no less true today
That souls are self-condemned by sin
Who from the Savior turn away.
Lord, in this famine so distressing,
Where ignorance is so widespread,
May we extend the Gospel's blessing
Through Christ who is the Living Bread!
