"Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself" (Matthew 22:37-39).
Love's order for us is designed
By God Himself above:
With all our heart, our soul, and mind,
We first give Him our love.
The order here will surely matter:
To love our neighbor then,
For Christ in us fulfills the latter,
To love our fellow men.
Our love for others will amount
To wells that soon run dry
Unless we're drawing from the Fount
Of Love that cannot die.
This is why we love God first,
Avoiding futile labor:
We satisfy in Him our thirst
For love toward our neighbor.
Lord, You know how weak and flawed
This love is of our own,
But as we first love You, Lord God,
Your love through us is shown.
