"Then Satan answered the Lord, and said, Doth Job fear God for nought?" (Job 1:9).
The searching question Satan hurled
At God concerning Job,
Is valid in our present world,
Which we do well to probe.
Did Job fear God and serve Him well
For nought without a reason?
Of course not, Job would live to tell,
When patience had its season.
And what about the rest of us?
Do we fear God for nought?
Do we understand it thus,
That with a price we're bought?
Let us not forget the love
That came to seek the lost.
Our Savior left His throne above,
And paid a dreadful cost.
We know that our Redeemer reigns
Triumphant from the grave.
And thus eternal love constrains
The souls He died to save.
We neither fear the Lord for nought,
Nor serve Him without cause.
He loved us first! O wondrous thought
Transcending lifeless laws!
