"The Lord sent out a great wind into the sea, and there was a mighty tempest in the sea, so that the ship was like to be broken.... But Jonah was gone down into the sides of the ship; and he lay, and was fast asleep. So the shipmaster came to him, and said unto him, What meanest thou, O sleeper? Arise, call upon thy God, if so be that God will think upon us, that we perish not" (Jonah 1:4-6).
The downward slope we clearly see
When Jonah fled from God's command,
And then he slept in apathy,
Despite the fearful storm at hand.
If not the tempest, who could wake
This wayward prophet sleeping hard?
If not the storm, what would it take,
So that God's servant might be jarred?
At last the prophet would be wise,
By words that stirred within him shame:
What mean you, sleeper? Now arise!
Call on God! Invoke His name!
The lesson here to us applies
And bids us think upon this scene,
That we might hear those fearful cries:
O sleeper, rise! What do you mean?
For even now there is a storm,
That threatens souls with every wave.
Though apathy accepts this norm,
God does not, and longs to save.
So let us hear the Savior's voice,
And go wherever He has sent,
For heaven's angels still rejoice
When one lost sinner will repent.
