When I Wake

Read:  Psalm 17 / Proverbs 17 / 2 Samuel 23 / John 9

Psalm 17:14,15 ~ Men of the world… have their portion in this life. As for me, I will behold thy face in righteousness: I shall be satisfied, when I awake, with thy likeness.

Proverbs 17:17 ~ A friend loveth at all times, and a brother is born for adversity.

2 Samuel 23:5 ~ He hath made with me an everlasting covenant, ordered… and sure: for this is all my salvation.

John 9:25 ~ He answered and said… one thing I know, that, whereas I was blind, now I see.

When I awake I shall behold

The beauty of my Savior’s face,

Yet while I live, I would be bold

To tell the Gospel of His grace.

When life on earth comes to an end

With all of its adversity,

I’ll see my everlasting Friend

Who gave Himself to rescue me.

Light that Leads

Read:  Psalm 16 / Proverbs 16 / 2 Samuel 22 / John 8

Psalm 16:11 ~ Thou wilt shew me the path of life: in thy presence is fulness of joy… pleasures forevermore.

Proverbs 16:6 ~ By mercy and truth iniquity is purged: and by the fear of the LORD men depart from evil.

2 Samuel 22:29 ~ For thou art my lamp, O LORD: and the LORD will lighten my darkness.

John 8:12 ~ I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.

There is a path that God has shown

Which leads to joy eternally.

That path is found in Christ alone;

His grace and truth have made us free.

He is the Light that shines today

Where only darkness loomed before.

He is our Lord who leads the way

Because He lives forevermore!

Own the Oath

Read:  Psalm 15 / Proverbs 15 / 2 Samuel 21 / John 7

Psalm 15:1,2 ~ LORD, who shall abide in thy tabernacle? who shall dwell in thy holy hill? He that walketh uprightly, and worketh righteousness, and speaketh the truth in his heart.

Proverbs 15:33 ~ The fear of the LORD is the instruction of wisdom; and before honor is humility.

2 Samuel 21:7 ~ The king spared Mephibosheth, the son of Jonathan… because of the LORD'S oath that was between them, between David and Jonathan the son of Saul.

John 7:38 ~ He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water.

In Christ we safely shall abide

Since He has promised to be near.

So let our hearts be purified

And guided by a godly fear.

We own the oath that God has spoken

To all who by His grace are spared.

The Scripture never shall be broken

By which the Gospel is declared.

Love for the Lost

Read:  Psalm 14 / Proverbs 14 / 2 Samuel 20 / John 6

Psalm 14:2,3 ~ The LORD looked down from heaven upon the children of men, to see if there were any that did understand, and seek God. They are all gone aside, they are all together become filthy: there is none that doeth good, no, not one.

Proverbs 14:25 ~ A true witness delivereth souls: but a deceitful witness speaketh lies.

2 Samuel 20:22 ~ Then the woman went unto all the people in her wisdom… And Joab returned to Jerusalem unto the king.

John 6:67,68 ~ Then said Jesus unto the twelve, Will ye also go away? Then Simon Peter answered him, Lord, to whom shall we go? thou hast the words of eternal life.

The Lord looked from His lofty place

To see humanity undone.

Not one had turned to seek His face,

And none did good, not even one.

But God so loved the lost that He

Sent Christ to pay the debt we owe.

Apart from Christ, where could we flee?

To Whom but Jesus shall we go?

Song amid Sorrow

Read:  Psalm 13 / Proverbs 13 / 2 Samuel 19 / John 5

Psalm 13:6 ~ I will sing unto the LORD, because he hath dealt bountifully with me.

Proverbs 13:8 ~ The ransom of a man's life are his riches: but the poor heareth not rebuke.

2 Samuel 19:2 ~ And the victory that day was turned into mourning unto all the people: for the people heard say that day how the king was grieved for his son.

Isaiah 53:10 ~ Yet it pleased the LORD to bruise him; he hath put him to grief: when thou shalt make his soul an offering for sin, he shall see his seed, he shall prolong his days, and the pleasure of the LORD shall prosper in his hand.

John 5:20,37 ~ For the Father loveth the Son… And the Father himself, which hath sent me, hath borne witness of me.

My God and Father hears my song

That celebrates the victory

Of Jesus Christ, who suffered long

In sorrow when He died for me.

The Father’s grief, so very deep,

Was more than anyone could measure,

And yet, to rescue straying sheep,

Christ’s bruising gave the Father pleasure!

Run with Reasons

Read:  Psalm 12 / Proverbs 12 / 2 Samuel 18 / John 4

Psalm 12:2,4,6 ~ With flattering lips and with a double heart do they speak... With our tongue will we prevail; our lips are our own: who is lord over us?... The words of the LORD are pure.

Proverbs 12:22 ~ Lying lips are abomination to the LORD: but they that deal truly are his delight.

2 Samuel 18:22 ~ Wherefore wilt thou run, my son, seeing that thou hast no tidings ready?

John 4:35 ~ Lift up your eyes, and look on the fields; for they are white already to harvest.

The lips that flatter and deceive

Shall not prevail in the end.

God’s words are pure which we believe;

This is the Gospel we defend.

We run with reasons to display

The evidence we have prepared

To prove and preach the truth today

While souls in danger may be spared.

Wrong about Wrath

Read:  Psalm 11 / Proverbs 11 / 2 Samuel 17 / John 3

Psalm 11:1,4 ~ In the LORD put I my trust: how say ye to my soul, Flee as a bird to your mountain?... The LORD'S throne is in heaven… his eyelids try, the children of men.

Proverbs 11:7 ~ When a wicked man dieth, his expectation shall perish: and the hope of unjust men perisheth.

2 Samuel 17:14 ~ The LORD had appointed to defeat the good counsel of Ahithophel, to… bring evil upon Absalom.

John 3:36 ~ He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him.

I need not flee as birds have flown

To find a place where I may hide,

For Christ is still upon His throne,

And by Him every heart is tried.

The wicked have an expectation

That none shall judge their evil path,

Yet they shall face their condemnation,

For they shall not escape God’s wrath.

He Hears the Heart

Read:  Psalm 10 / Proverbs 10 / 2 Samuel 16 / John 2

Psalm 10:17 ~ LORD, thou hast heard the desire of the humble: thou wilt prepare their heart, thou wilt cause thine ear to hear.

Proverbs 10:24 ~ The desire of the righteous shall be granted.

2 Samuel 16:17 ~ And Absalom said to Hushai, Is this thy kindness to thy friend? why wentest thou not with thy friend?

John 2:24-25 ~ But Jesus did not commit himself unto them, because he knew all men, and needed not that any should testify of man: for he knew what was in man.

The Lord has heard each heart’s desire;

He knows the proud; He hears the humble.

The humble shall be lifted higher;

The unrepentant proud shall stumble.

Though David knew not who to trust

When his opponents hid their plan,

Our Lord knew well what men discussed;

He hears the heart of every man.

Word and Witness

Read:  Psalm 9 / Proverbs 9 / 2 Samuel 15 / John 1

Psalm 9:1 ~ I will praise thee, O LORD, with my whole heart; I will shew forth all thy marvelous works.

Proverbs 9:6 ~ Forsake the foolish, and live; and go in the way of understanding.

2 Samuel 15:15 ~ The king's servants said… Thy servants are ready to do whatsoever my lord the king shall appoint.

John 1:6.7 ~ John… came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all men through him might believe.

I’ll praise the Lord with all my heart

As I declare what He has done.

Let sinners from their sin depart,

And let them to the Savior run!

I’ll stand with those who serve our King

As He appoints me with His favor.

Like John the Baptist, I will bring

The word and witness of my Savior.

Majesty and Mercy

Read:  Psalm 8 / Proverbs 8 / 2 Samuel 14 / Luke 24

Psalm 8:3,4 ~ When I consider thy heavens, the work of thy fingers… which thou hast ordained; What is man, that thou art mindful of him? and the son of man, that thou visitest him?

Proverbs 8:23,31 ~ I was set up from everlasting, from the beginning, or ever the earth was… Rejoicing in the habitable part of his earth; and my delights were with the sons of men.

2 Samuel 14:32,33 ~ Absalom answered… if there be any iniquity in me, let him kill me... and the king kissed Absalom.

Luke 24:44,45 ~ All things must be fulfilled which were written in the law of Moses, and in the prophets, and in the psalms, concerning me. Then opened he their understanding, that they might understand the scriptures.

When we consider all creation

That magnifies Christ’s majesty,

We marvel that He brought salvation

By dying in humility!

Iniquity condemned us all,

Yet for our sake the Lord was smitten!

Behold His mercy and recall

That He fulfilled that which was written.

Searching and Saving

Read:  Psalm 7 / Proverbs 7 / 2 Samuel 13 / Luke 23

Psalm 7:10 ~ My defense is of God, which saveth the upright in heart.

Proverbs 7:24,25 ~ Hearken unto me now therefore, O ye children, and attend to the words of my mouth. Let not thine heart decline to her ways, go not astray in her paths.

2 Samuel 13:39 ~ The soul of king David longed to go forth unto Absalom.

Luke 23:43 ~ And Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, Today shalt thou be with me in paradise.

The Lord is searching for all hearts,

Yet saves the sinner who repents,

For to the upright He imparts

The promise of His sure defense.

When Christ our Lord was crucified,

Consider how the thieves behaved,

For though our Lord for all men died,

The one who trusted Christ was saved.

Remedy of Reproof

Read:  Psalm 6 / Proverbs 6 / 2 Samuel 12 / Luke 22

Psalm 6:2 ~ Have mercy upon me, O LORD; for I am weak: O LORD, heal me; for my bones are vexed.

Proverbs 6:23 ~ For the commandment is a lamp; and the law is light; and reproofs of instruction are the way of life:

2 Samuel 12:7 ~ And Nathan said to David, Thou art the man.

Luke 22:31-32 ~ And the Lord said, Simon, Simon, behold, Satan hath desired to have you, that he may sift you as wheat: But I have prayed for thee, that thy faith fail not: and when thou art converted, strengthen thy brethren.

The Lord’s reproof that we have heard

Should make us pray with urgency

For healing promised in His Word;

This is God’s gracious remedy.

Reproof was heard in David’s case

And Peter likewise from the Lord.

Our Savior intercedes with grace

That we may also be restored.

David's Dismay

Read:  Psalm 5 / Proverbs 5 / 2 Samuel 11 / Luke 21

Psalm 5:8 ~ Lead me, O LORD, in thy righteousness because of mine enemies; make thy way straight before my face.

Proverbs 5:21 ~ For the ways of man are before the eyes of the LORD, and he pondereth all his goings.

2 Samuel 11:27 ~ The thing that David had done displeased the LORD.

Luke 21:36 ~ Watch ye therefore, and pray always… to stand before the Son of man.

The Lord has seen our enemies,

Both those without and those within.

We need to ponder what He sees,

And by His counsel, flee from sin.

As David found, to his dismay,

His heart was weak when he was tried.

Beware!  We too must watch and pray

To stand with grace God will provide.

Christ Still the Corner Stone

Read:  Psalm 4 / Proverbs 4 / 2 Samuel 10 / Luke 20

Psalm 4:4 ~ Stand in awe, and sin not: commune with your own heart upon your bed, and be still. Selah.

Proverbs 4:11 ~ I have taught thee in the way of wisdom; I have led thee in right paths.

2 Samuel 10:12 ~ Be of good courage… for our people… for… our God: and the LORD do that which seemeth him good.

Luke 20:17 ~ What is this… written, The stone which the builders rejected, the same is become the head of the corner?

Behold the Lord, and stand in awe,

For He delivered us from wrath,

He satisfied His holy law,

And leads us in His righteous path.

We find our courage in His Word

By every promise He makes known

As we are certainly assured

That Christ is still the Corner Stone.
