Our Help and Our Hope

Read:  Psalm 46 / Proverbs 15 / 2 Kings 6 / Acts 17

 

Psalm 46:1-3 ~ God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore will not we fear… though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea… Selah.

Proverbs 15:33 ~ The fear of the LORD is the instruction of wisdom; and before honor is humility.

2 Kings 6:17 ~ Elisha prayed… LORD, I pray thee, open his eyes, that he may see… And, behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire round about Elisha.

Acts 17:30,31 ~ God… now commandeth all men everywhere to repent: because he… will judge the world… given assurance unto all men, in that he hath raised him from the dead. 

 

Though earthly kingdoms disappear

And mountains fall into the sea,

There is no cause for us to fear;

God is our Help eternally. 

 

God is our Hope who makes us wise,

Instructing us with confidence

To pray that He will open eyes

Of every sinner who repents.

Beauty and the Behavior

Read:  Psalm 45 / Proverbs 14 / 2 Kings 5 / Acts 16

 

Psalm 45:10,11 ~ Hearken, O daughter… forget also thine own people, and thy father's house; so shall the king greatly desire thy beauty: for he is thy Lord; and worship thou him. 

Proverbs 14:35 ~ The king's favor is toward a wise servant: but his wrath is against him that causeth shame.

2 Kings 5:26 ~ Went not mine heart with thee, when the man turned again from his chariot to meet thee? Is it a time to receive money, and to receive garments?

Acts 16:30,31 ~ Sirs, what must I do to be saved? And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved.

 

When we are worshiping our Savior,

Distractions no more cloud our eyes. 

His beauty changes our behavior, 

And His instruction makes us wise.

 

Is this a time for cherishing

The carnal things we once had craved?

Awake, for souls are perishing

Who by the Gospel may be saved!

Boldly Boast

Read:  Psalm 44 / Proverbs 13 / 2 Kings 4 / Acts 15

 

Psalm 44:8 ~ In God we boast all the day long, and praise thy name forever. Selah.

Proverbs 13:20 ~ He that walketh with wise men shall be wise: but a companion of fools shall be destroyed.

2 Kings 4:43,44 ~ Give the people, that they may eat: for thus saith the LORD, They shall eat, and shall leave thereof… They did eat, and left thereof, according to the word of the LORD.

Acts 15:4 ~ And when they were come to Jerusalem, they were received of the church, and of the apostles and elders, and they declared all things that God had done with them.

 

We boldly boast in Christ our Lord

Who gave Himself for our salvation.  

Forever He shall be adored 

By every kindred, tongue, and nation.

 

We celebrate the victory

That our heroic Savior won. 

We’ll boast in Him eternally,

Declaring what our Lord has done.

God of our Gladness

Read:  Psalm 43 / Proverbs 12 / 2 Kings 3 / Acts 14 

 

Psalm 43:4 ~ I go unto the altar of God, unto God my exceeding joy: yea, upon the harp will I praise thee, O God my God.

Proverbs 12:25 ~ Heaviness in the heart of man maketh it stoop: but a good word maketh it glad.

2 Kings 3:11,12 ~ Jehoshaphat said, Is there not here a prophet of the LORD, that we may inquire of the LORD by him?...  Here is Elisha… The word of the LORD is with him.

Acts 14:21,22 ~ When they had preached the gospel… they returned again… confirming the souls of the disciples, and exhorting them to continue in the faith.

 

There is a place our hearts can go,

A refuge no one can destroy,

For at the cross our God will show

His love that stirs our hearts with joy.

 

The Word of God dispels our sadness

And sets our hearts on things above,

For sorrow is replaced by gladness

When we recall our Savior’s love.

My Refuge and My Rest

Read:  Psalm 42 / Proverbs 11 / 2 Kings 2 / Acts 13

 

Psalm 42:5 ~ Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted in me? hope thou in God: for I shall yet praise him for the help of his countenance.

Proverbs 11:3 ~ The integrity of the upright shall guide them: but the perverseness of transgressors shall destroy them.

2 Kings 2:9 ~ Elijah said unto Elisha, Ask what I shall do for thee, before I be taken away from thee. And Elisha said, I pray thee, let a double portion of thy spirit be upon me.

Acts 13:45,52 ~ But when the Jews saw the multitudes, they were filled with envy… And the disciples were filled with joy, and with the Holy Ghost.

 

Why should my soul be so distressed?

My Savior lives who for me died. 

He is my Refuge and my Rest. 

He is my Guardian and Guide. 

 

May God increase His rule in me,

Enlarging grace He will employ.

His Spirit gives me liberty

And fills me with abundant joy.

Favor over my Foes

Psalm 41:11 ~ By this I know that thou favorest me, because mine enemy doth not triumph over me.

Proverbs 10:29 ~ The way of the LORD is strength to the upright: but destruction shall be to the workers of iniquity.

2 Kings 1:17 ~ So he [Ahaziah] died according to the word of the LORD which Elijah had spoken.

Acts 12:23,24 ~ And immediately the angel of the Lord smote him [Herod], because he gave not God the glory: and he was eaten of worms… But the word of God grew and multiplied.

 

I know the Lord has shown me favor

Because my foes have been defeated

And I am strengthened by my Savior

So that His will may be completed.

 

The Scriptures never shall be broken

Because the Lord can never lie.

His prophecies so clearly spoken

Exalt the Lord we glorify.

Prepared to Preach

Psalm 40:1-3 ~ The LORD… inclined unto me, and heard my cry. He brought me up also out of an horrible pit, out of the miry clay, and set my feet upon a rock, and established my goings. And he hath put a new song in my mouth.

Proverbs 9:10,12 ~ The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy is understanding… If thou be wise, thou shalt be wise for thyself: but if thou scornest, thou alone shalt bear it.

1 Kings 22:14 ~ And Micaiah said, As the LORD liveth, what the LORD saith unto me, that will I speak.

Acts 11:17 ~ Forasmuch then as God gave them the like gift as he did unto us… what was I, that I could withstand God?

 

The Lord responded to my cry

And brought me from a pit of mire. 

Up to the rock I’m lifted high

With songs He only could inspire.

 

I am prepared by God’s command

To speak the truth that fools have scorned,

For woe is me if I withstand

His call to preach to those He’s warned.

Awful Alternative

Read:  Psalm 39 / Proverbs 8 / 1 Kings 21 / Acts 10 

 

Psalm 39:7 ~ Now, Lord, what wait I for? my hope is in thee.

Proverbs 8:13 ~ The fear of the LORD is to hate evil: pride, and arrogancy, and the evil way, and the froward mouth, do I hate.

1 Kings 21:20 ~ Thou hast sold thyself to work evil in the sight of the LORD.

Acts 10:36,42,43 ~ Jesus Christ (he is Lord of all)… was ordained of God to be the Judge of quick and dead. To him give all the prophets witness, that through his name whosoever believeth in him shall receive remission of sins.

 

Our hope is found in Jesus Christ

Who gave Himself to save our soul. 

The Lord of all was sacrificed;

Our ransom has been paid in full.

 

How awful the alternative:

A hopeless, endless condemnation!

Our Savior died that we might live;

How costly was this great salvation!

Peace and Pain

Psalm 38:15,22 ~ In thee, O LORD, do I hope: thou wilt hear, O Lord my God. Make haste to help me, O Lord my salvation.

Proverbs 7:2 ~ Keep my commandments, and live; and my law as the apple of thine eye.

1 Kings 20:28 ~ Thus saith the LORD, Because the Syrians have said, The LORD is God of the hills, but he is not God of the valleys, therefore will I deliver all this great multitude into thine hand, and ye shall know that I am the LORD.

Acts 9:22 ~ Saul increased… in strength, and confounded the Jews which dwelt at Damascus, proving that this is… Christ.

 

The Lord will hear us when we pray;

Our hope in Him is not in vain.

We need to trust Him and obey

In times of peace as well as pain. 

 

The Lord is God of all the hills;

He’s Lord of all the valleys too.

This is the faith that God instills

By proving that His Word is true.

Daily Delight

Psalm 37:3,4 ~ Trust in the LORD… do good… Delight thyself also in the LORD… he shall give… the desires of thine heart.

Proverbs 6:20-22 ~ My son, keep thy father's commandment… When thou goest, it shall lead thee; when thou sleepest, it shall keep thee; and when thou awakest, it shall talk with thee.

1 Kings 19:12 ~ And after the earthquake a fire; but the LORD was not in the fire: and after the fire a still small voice.

Acts 8:29,35 ~ The Spirit said unto Philip, Go near, and join thyself to this chariot… and [he] preached unto him Jesus.

 

When we delight and trust in God,

He gives to us our heart’s desire,

He guides us with His staff and rod,

And leads us upward, ever higher.

 

We listen for His still small voice,

As daily we delight to hear it,

And thus revived, our hearts rejoice

As we are led forth by His Spirit.

Still Stiffnecked

Psalm 36:9 ~ For with thee is the fountain of life: in thy light shall we see light.

The fountain of God’s life imparts

His light that shows us what is true. 

The Lord is pondering our hearts;

There’s nothing hidden from His view.

 

In spite of overwhelming proof,

The truth of God is still dismissed

By stiffnecked hearts that stand aloof

Against the Lord whom they resist.

His Word and His Way

Psalm 35:3,27 ~ Say unto my soul, I am thy salvation… Let the LORD be magnified, which hath pleasure in the prosperity of his servant.

Proverbs 4:11,26 ~ I have taught thee in the way of wisdom; I have led thee in right paths… Ponder the path of thy feet, and let all thy ways be established.

1 Kings 17:24 ~ The woman said to Elijah, Now by this I know that thou art a man of God, and that the word of the LORD in thy mouth is truth.

Acts 6:7 ~ And the word of God increased; and the number of the disciples multiplied in Jerusalem greatly; and a great company of the priests were obedient to the faith.

 

I hear my gracious Savior say

That He alone is my salvation.

His Word instructs me in His way

In every path and situation.

 

His truth is guiding my behavior,

Informing what I say and do

To show the way of Christ my Savior

That demonstrates His Word is true.

Scriptures and Skeptics

Psalm 34:3 ~ O magnify the LORD with me, and let us exalt his name together.

Proverbs 3:26 ~ For the LORD shall be thy confidence, and shall keep thy foot from being taken.

1 Kings 16:34 ~ Hiel the Beth-elite [did] build Jericho: he laid the foundation thereof in Abiram his firstborn, and set up the gates thereof in his youngest son Segub, according to the word of the LORD, which he spake by Joshua the son of Nun.

Acts 5:20 ~ Go, stand and speak in the temple to the people all the words of this life.

 

Let Jesus Christ be magnified

As we exalt His precious name. 

Our Lord, whose Word is true and tried,

Fulfilled the Scriptures when He came.

 

Prophetic truth is on display,

Fulfilling every promise spoken.

No matter what the skeptics say,

The Scriptures never can be broken.

Psalm 33:4,18 ~ The word of the LORD is right; and all his works are done in truth… Behold, the eye of the LORD is upon them that fear him, upon them that hope in his mercy.

Proverbs 2:6-8 ~ The LORD giveth wisdom… knowledge and understanding… and preserveth the way of his saints.

1 Kings 15:11 ~ Asa did that which was right in the eyes of the LORD, as did David his father. 

Acts 4:12 ~ Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.

 

The Word of God is always right;

His truth exposes what is wrong.

Christ Jesus is the world’s Light,

Our Strength, Salvation, and our Song.

 

There is a Savior heaven gave

So greatly needed among men.

None other name but Christ can save,

By whom we must be born again.
